The King’s Road’s Curzon Cinema Returns, Reimagined
Chelsea’s cinematic story is entering a new chapter – a familiar façade with a bold new creative world behind it. Curzon is returning to the King’s Road with Curzon Chelsea, a flagship that feels less like a cinema and more like a living, breathing cultural hub, opening late 2026 at The Gaumont.
Behind the restored Art Deco frontage, 20,000 sq ft of carefully conceived space is being brought to life. At its core sits a 300-seat auditorium with state-of-the-art sound and 4K projection, engineered for premieres and large-scale screenings. Surrounding it, a complementary suite of spaces reflects the evolving nature of cultural production: studios for podcasts and writers’ rooms, flexible screening environments, and a central atrium designed to accommodate live programming, launches and events.
The Gallery, a bar and café, is intended as a social and collaborative anchor, supporting informal working, meetings and day-to-day interaction. Together, these elements create a destination that extends beyond cinema, enabling making, testing and sharing within a single, connected environment.
This integrated approach reflects a broader shift in the industry. As Curzon CEO Philip Knatchbull notes, the ambition is to create “a multi-purpose environment for the wider creative community… where audiences move fluidly between film, audio and live events for a truly immersive experience.” The result is a space that supports both the creation and presentation of work, allowing ideas to evolve in real time.
“Curzon Chelsea reflects a rethinking of the role that Curzon holds at the cutting edge of the industry by creating a multi-purpose environment for the wider creative community. Our flagship location will span film, art, storytelling, content creation, podcasting, live performance and conversation-led events. In this sense, Curzon Chelsea brings together everything we have been envisioning for the future of Curzon, and creative culture more generally. We’re excited to return to such an historic location with a new flagship that will actively promote the creation and exhibition of the very best of British and international art and culture.”
The building itself reinforces this sense of dynamism. Immersive projection will animate the interiors – created by CT London, the studio behind FRAMELESS London, while a newly commissioned large-scale installation, will embed visual culture into the space from the outset. Conceived as a series of flexible, geometric volumes, the architecture supports a diverse and adaptable programme while creating a distinctive and engaging spatial experience.
For Chelsea, the opening represents a significant return. Curzon first opened on this site in 1983, becoming part of the area’s cultural fabric before closing in 2018. Its revival signals a continued investment in culture as a driver of place and community.
Hugh Seaborn, CEO Cadogan commented, “Curzon has long been part of the Chelsea community and we look forward to their reopening as part of The Gaumont, a landmark development designed to celebrate Chelsea’s cultural heritage and enhance its thriving creative scene. Curzon’s focus on not just incredible cinema, but a space for makers and creators to thrive perfectly aligns with our vision of Chelsea as a place where innovators and artists can flourish and complements the young independent businesses now surrounding them as part of this exciting, fast-growing creative community on the King’s Road.”
When it opens later this year Curzon Chelsea will offer far more than a place to watch films. It will provide a platform for creative exchange, supporting a new generation of artists, storytellers and audiences. A confident new chapter for Chelsea’s cultural life.
